Aleister Humes of the Lambton Lions varsity esports team was among the over 1000 competitors who recently played at Frosty Faustings XI in Elmhurst, Il. Humes competed in a pair of popular fighting games: Street Fighter V and Marvel v. Capcom 3.
Although the experienced Humes was expecting a deep run into each tournament, he was unfortunately eliminated in the early rounds. “Overall at Frosty, to be honest I felt disappointed in my results,” Humes commented. “I know that I can do better. Just means I’ll be training that much harder for when I go to my next major.”
Humes mentioned that although the two games are in the same ‘FGC’ genre, they have their similarities and differences. “Street Fighter and Marvel are, controversial opinion incoming, 2 similar games in concept that simply play in very different ways. At their core they both harbour off the same concepts of needing a strong neutral game (Neutral game is the portion of a fighting game where you arent in a combo. Its where people poke at each other or try to open each other up). The main difference is that in Street Fighter theres a lot more emphasis on the small things, especially things such as spacing, but also Marvel gets a lot more chaotic and tends to be a one or two touch game where if you guess wrong once or twice and the character is gone and so you have to work within your team to turn it around in the case of Marvel.”
Aleister also spoke about his training regimen leading up to the big event in Elmhurst, Il. “Honestly, my training routine fell out of place before the event as prior to, I was sick until the day before we left. Generally I tend to spar with my close friends consistently about 2 or so hours a day traditionally though. I feel like i want to consider adding more people to my sparring regiment, so I can understand more play styles.”
Although he was disappointed with his end result at Frosty Faustings XI, Humes says he’s ready to bounce back and is already preparing for his next event. “I should be out and about for Final Round in Georgia for my next event, playing Street Figjter V as this year I’m gonna push myself to make it to Capcom Cup. If you see me there, please say hi! I always love making friends in the scene!”
