The finals for LEO 2019 this past Friday marked the end of the inaugural season. The beginning of the day saw the two top teams for League of Legends — Kawaii Killers and Vorpal Swords — go head-to-head in a best-of-5 series. These teams both ended the regular season with a 7-1 record only losing to one another. The Kawaii Killers showed that they have been hard at practice and came out strong with two convincing wins. With Vorpal Swords’ backs to the wall and seeing they may get swept out of LEO 2019 they took a break, regrouped, then started mounting their comeback. The next three games were exciting to watch as Vorpal Swords fought for every win and won the next three games making them LEO 2019 champions.
Alongside League of Legends, LEO 2019 kicked off on Friday afternoon with the final 8 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate contestants squaring off for the top prize. Sauce and N3on both looked eager to set the tone and assert their dominance over the other early in the tournament, but it was N3on who took an early lead. As Sauce continued to prove his dominance in the winners’ bracket, Error showed early signs of mounting a title challenge after stringing together several strong performances. Eventually being sent to losers’ bracket by Sauce, the chance for Error to face Sauce again for the title came down to having to eliminate N3on, who had been untouchable since his early defeat to Sauce in the first round. It almost seemed like fate, as N3on proved much too strong for Error and eliminated him from the competition, solidifying Error’s third-place finish. The final match between N3on and Sauce started off with N3on showing off his skills and resetting the bracket. As they went back and forth, stock for stock, match for match, Sauce ended up on top taking first place over N3on.
With League of Legends and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate out of the way, we finished the day with Rocket League. The first matchup saw Despacito 2 and The Duo where Despacito 2 continued to dominate the competition. Despacito 2 barely gave The Duo a chance to score a goal after sweeping the series 3-0 with scores of 3-1, 9-1, and 7-1. The next game had Beau’s Pancakes take on Pizza Time and they also had a very convincing win with a 4-0 shutout. With both winners identified for the finals, Pizza Time and The Duo would play for the bronze medals. The Duo put up a good fight but couldn’t seem to get traction in the four games they played, taking Pizza Time into 2 overtime games but ultimately losing the series 3-1. Finally, Beau’s Pancakes and Despacito 2 would play for the LEO 2019 champion spot. It was a familiar scene as Despacito 2 won all three matches leaving them with no losses. This left Despacito 2 with a perfect season and the first-place spot, Beau’s Pancakes in second, and Pizza Time in third.
We want to congratulate all of our winners and thank all of our competitors for giving it their all! We also wanted to thank everyone who watched on Twitch over the past 4 weeks and all attendees at the April 5th final event. We couldn’t have asked for a better inaugural season and we can’t wait to see everyone come out for LEO 2020!
