The historic season for the Lambton Lions Rocket League team has come to an end. After advancing past the group stage, the Lions were just three wins away from capturing the NECC Emergents National Championship title.
Up first was Northwestern College (Orange City, Iowa) in the quarterfinals. The Lions jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the best-of-5 series with a pair of close victories (2-1, 5-4). From there, Northwestern would regain the momentum and take the next two games in decisive fashion (5-0, 2-0), forcing a Game 5 and threatening to complete the reverse sweep. In yet another game that came down to the wire, the Lions would hold on for a 3-2 Game 5 victory and take the best-of-5 series 3-2.
With barely enough time to catch their breath, the Lions would square off against CSU Vikes Green (Cleveland, Ohio) in the best-of-7 semifinals the following day. CSU was in the driver’s seat from the start with a pair of wins (5-2, 3-1) to take an early 2-0 lead. The Lions and Vikes would then go back and forth in a series of nail-biting games, but ultimately it would be the Lions whose championship dreams would be shattered as they fell 4-2 to CSU Vikes Green — the eventual winners of the NECC Emergents National Championship.
This marked the first time that any Lambton Lions team in any title advanced to the NECC National Championship. We wish to congratulate all our players on a historic season, and we look forward to seeing what they will do in 2023-24.
