Following last week’s 3-0 win against the Conestoga Condors, the Lambton Lions Rocket League team were looking for their second consecutive OPSE win as they squared off against the 2-0 Queen’s University Gaels on Friday night.
The first game in the best-of-5 match saw both sides played well defensively through the first four minutes. The 0-0 stalemate was finally broken with 51 seconds remaining in the game as QNTM scored for the Gaels. Queen’s would add one more goal 10 seconds later, giving the Gaels a 2-0 win in Game 1.
Game 2 would see more offense from both sides. The Gaels opened the scoring 35 seconds in, but Matt ‘Sin’ Sawatzky would retaliate for the Lions just 10 seconds later for his first goal of the match. After the Gaels added two more goals, Gavin ‘Ahrupt’ Storozuk would score his first of the match, but it would prove to be not enough, as Queen’s took Game 2 with a 4-2 score.
With Game 3 being a ‘must-win’ for the Lions, Ahrupt was quick to put the Lions in front by scoring the opening goal less than one minute into the game. Trench would tie it for the Gaels with 1:20 remaining, sending Game 3 to overtime. The clutch goal for the Lions would come at the 1:27 mark as Sin set up Ahrupt for his second goal of the game which would be the game-winner.
Game 4 also proved to be a thriller. Queen’s would strike first with 1:17 left in the game after a series of great defensive stops on both sides. With time running out, the Lions needed another clutch performance to force overtime. As the clock hit 0:00, SadBean — in his OPSE debut — fired a long-range shot from midfield that made its way through all 3 defenders and came mere pixels away from going in. Queen’s would win Game 4 1-0, taking the series 3-1 over the Lions.
